NOOKMOOD was born from a simple obsession: woven, not printed.
In a world of mass-produced, surface-printed patterns, we sought something real — textiles where the beauty is in the weave itself, not painted on top. We found it in Songjin brocade, one of China's Four Great Brocades, handwoven in Suzhou for over 1,000 years.
Our Story
NOOKMOOD founder bobo grew up in Huzhou, Zhejiang — a region steeped in silk culture, just a short journey from Suzhou, the historic silk capital of China. Surrounded by this heritage, the vision was clear: take one of the world's most extraordinary textiles and give it a modern life.
Each NOOKMOOD bag begins as raw mulberry silk, spun into thread, then handwoven on traditional looms by artisans who have practiced their craft for decades. One meter of Songjin takes nearly a full day to weave. The result is a fabric you can feel — run your hand across it, tilt it in the light, and the pattern shifts as the raised threads catch the sun.
Why Songjin?
Songjin means "Song Dynasty brocade" — named for the era when this weaving technique reached its pinnacle. It is recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Unlike printed fabric, where a pattern sits on the surface, Songjin patterns are woven through the material. They cannot peel, fade, or rub off — because the pattern IS the fabric. Think of it like Harris Tweed or Japanese denim: a textile whose identity lives in its weave.
