What is Songjin?

Songjin (宋锦) — literally "Song Dynasty Brocade" — is one of China's Four Great Brocades, with a weaving tradition stretching back over 1,000 years to the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127 CE). Originating in Suzhou, the silk capital of China, Songjin was originally woven for imperial robes, ceremonial garments, and diplomatic gifts.

Woven, Not Printed

The defining characteristic of Songjin is that the pattern is woven into the fabric, not printed on the surface. Each thread is deliberately interlaced to create the pattern from within. This means:

  • The pattern will never fade, peel, or rub off
  • The fabric has a subtle, multidimensional sheen that shifts with light
  • The texture is richer and more tactile than any printed silk
  • Each piece is structurally durable — woven to last generations

Seven Patterns, Seven Stories

  • Celestial Horse — Mythical horses bearing treasures, a symbol of success
  • Pomegranate Bloom — Pomegranate flowers symbolizing fertility and abundance
